The island was left open to a fresh influx of immigrants from the continent at the beginning of the fifth century when the Roman legions left Britain to protect the collapsing Empire. These immigrants were Germanic tribes from what are now Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Frisians.
